A Notary Public License may be renewed every four years by making an application in the same way as required for the original Notary License. If you are currently commissioned as a notary public, you shall not submit a new application. A notary license can be canceled by submitting in writing to the Secretary of State. Usually, any person convicted of a felony cannot be re-appointed or appointed as a notary public license holder. If you were convicted within the 4 year term a court in which the notary public license is held must notify the Secretary of State within ten days after the conviction. A notary public license holder can not use “notario publico” or any other non-english term on their business cards or any other form of advertisement. The notary license holder should give a copy of any record of a notarial act to anyone who requests it.
The most important duty of a notary license holder is attesting to signatures on documents. A Notary License holder can also administer oaths in depositions or similar situations. The notary license signature and seal are evidence that their signature is a genuine notary license and that the person is a licensed notary public. A notary public, once appointed, has authority on a statewide basis.
Authentication of a Notary Public’s signature is required when foreign jurisdictions are involved. A notary public can verify a person’s identity, usually with a motor car driver’s license, then the notary license holder presses their notary public seal on the document and signs it. There is no prohibition against a notary license holder notarizing another spouse’s signature.

A notary public prevents fraud and forgery by acting as an official, unbiased witness to the identity of the person who signs a document.
